Art Supplies
Experimenting with different collage techniques allows me to continually discover new paints, papers, pens, and adhesives. I am often asked which type and brand of art supplies I use, so have listed some of my favorites below. If you’ve taken one of my Mixed Media Collage Workshops you’ll recognize more than a few!
Each of these products can be found on my Amazon Idea List: Favorite Mixed Media Collage Supplies (click here to view). Feel free to give one or two of them a try when creating your next project. And if you find other tools and supplies that you love, please share them with me (@StrangeFarmGirl) on Instagram or Facebook.
Paint, Pens & Other Color
- Liquitex Soft Body Acrylic Paint This brand is less expensive than most, but still very good quality. It is available in tubes or jars. Raw Umber is my favorite.
- Golden Fluid Acrylic Paint This is a “more liquid” version of acrylic paint. I use this to add the sepia-toned, “aged” look we cover in the mixed media workshop. Van Dyke Brown Hue is the color I use the most.
- Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens I use different nib sizes depending on the size of the piece I am working on. The “B” or brush size nib is my favorite.
- Derwent Inktense Ink Blocks These ink blocks can be applied to paper directly, or used as pans of paint when wet. Once dry, the color is supposed to be permanent. (However, I have found the color is not entirely permanent until it is sealed with a fixative spray.)
- Marabu Mixed Media Art Spray I have found this spray is more waterproof and permanent than the Ranger brand (which has been known to smear.) Cocoa is my favorite color.
Brushes
- Loew-Cornell Golden Taklon Flat, Long Handle Brush Set of 12 These brushes are fairly inexpensive, come in a variety of sizes, and don’t lose their bristles.
Card Stock & Art Journal
- Mixed Media Cardstock from Ranger This is an alterable, heavyweight surface for wet and dry mediums.
- Ranger Dylusions Dyan Reaveley’s Creative Journal When complete, the 11.375 by 8.25 inch page size can be trimmed to 8×10” to fit in a standard frame.
Gel Medium & Glue
- Plaid Mod Podge – Matte Finish I use so much of this, I often buy the 16 oz size. The matte finish allows me to photograph completed artwork without the glare from a gloss finish.
- E6000 Glue This is the best way I can find to easily attach embellishments to smooth or partially uneven surfaces. This can get a bit “stringy” so have a wet Q-tip ready for easy clean-up.
